Aisenstadt Student Research Fellowship
Summer 2012 Call for Applications – Deadline: Friday, March 9 2012
Following a generous gift from the Nussia & André Aisenstadt Foundation, the McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism (CHRLP) is pleased to open this call for applications for a Nussia & André Aisenstadt Student Research Fellow.
André Aisenstadt was born in Russia in 1912 and studied physics and mathematics in Switzerland. With political tensions rising in Europe, Aisenstadt emigrated to Canada in 1939. He quickly became a pillar of Montreal’s artistic, educational, and Jewish communities. He played a key role in establishing the Montreal Jewish General Hospital Foundation and acted as governor of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and as president of the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal. On the executive for l’Université de Montréal, he helped to create the Centre de recherches mathématiques. For these and other accomplishments, he was made Grand Officier de l’Ordre national du Québec in 1991. Prior to his death in 2001, he and his wife Nussia created a foundation to carry on his philanthropic activities.
Job Description – The Aisenstadt Fellow will provide assistance to the CHRLP to further its mandate as a centre for research and action on human rights and legal pluralism. The Fellow will be involved in current Centre projects such as the compilation and editing of a collection, Dialogues on Human Rights and Legal Pluralism, the development of clinical legal education programs, and research projects on dignity and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and human rights in Latin America. The Fellow will help to develop seminar series and conferences for the forthcoming academic year. A portion of the work will be administrative in nature.
Duration – The Fellow will be asked to work for a period of 10-12 weeks on a full-time basis between May and August.
Salary – In accordance with current Faculty standards for research assistants.
Criteria – The Fellow will be selected on the basis of
- knowledge and commitment to human rights (please indicate relevant course work, activities, and professional experiences)
- research experience
- demonstration of initiative, dynamism, and ability to work independently
- writing, research and organizational skills
Eligibility – Current students of any nationality registered in the BCL/LLB, LLM or DCL programs may apply for this position.
